Alister McRae - Part 2

Special Stage 2 is about to start! We have another fantastic chat with Scottish rally sensation Alister McRae, including details around his drives in a wild ex-Possum Bourne WRX. Alister will always love his Scottish roots, but he actually calls Australia home these days and there's another generation of McRae in rallying, with Alister's son, Max, climbing his way toward the WRC. Alister shares how he supports Max’s ambitions while allowing him to navigate his own path. We also uncover Alister's hidden love of two-wheelers and gain insights into his work with Hyundai when the Korean manufacturer first set out to conquer the World Championship during a golden period for the sport. We respectfully avoid delving deeply into the passing of his superstar brother, Colin, but a nice memory or two pops up in conversation. Thanks to all of you who messaged asking to get Alister on the pod. Good shout! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know who else you want to hear from on Rusty's Garage.

The Motorsport Brief: SVG answers your questions

It’s our first chance to talk to Shane van Gisbergen since his big switch from Supercars to NASCAR, and it’s clear he’s loving this new chapter immensely. Thank you to everyone who responded on social media to our call for questions, including those who put their best radio voices on and sent in audio. While we couldn’t get to all your questions in the time Trackhouse Racing kindly gave us, we covered most of the recurring themes. Shane provides great insights on how wild the cars feel on ovals, drifting and burnouts in a NASCAR, his potential plans for more Sprintcar racing, the advice he's received from legends on both sides of the pond, and whether he would consider an Indy 500 wildcard like Kyle Larson did this year. Although we didn’t discuss his now-trademark celebration of kicking a footy into the crowd, we love how SVG is bringing some Kiwi rugby roots to the United States and making his mark! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

The Motorsport Brief: Chaz Mostert on the Mic

What took us so long? Supercars star Chaz Mostert joins us for a Darwin debrief. Ricky Bobby had Shake n Bake, but Chaz pulled off the ‘Cheeseburger Chase’ at Hidden Valley, making a string of epic passes to turn a tough weekend around. He shares what Walkinshaw Andretti United needs and the good things already in their arsenal. We also look ahead to the next round at Townsville, discuss reuniting with Lee Holdsworth for the enduros, and get Chaz's thoughts on his fast and funny new teammate, Ryan Wood. But it's not all about Supercars. We delve into the wild modifications he's made to his first car (which he still has), his joy in fatherhood, racing in GT3, and owning a team in GT4. Plus, we check in on his #nosocialhate initiative, a reminder for all of us to play nice online. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

Craig Dack - Part 1

Four-time Mr. Motocross title winner Craig Dack was recently inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, prompting Rusty to realise that a chat with ‘Dacka’ was long overdue. The result is an awesome episode, not just for Supercross and Motocross fans. From watching the legendary Stephen Gall (who is coming on the pod in the next few months) at Amaroo Park and trying to do monos like him on his BMX bike, to cutting laps on his first motorbike around the backyard on Christmas Day, there was no turning back from that moment. We reminisce about the catchphrase “Dack Attack” and the journalist who started it, how surreal it felt to race at famous venues in the United States, and how his success extended beyond bike racing. There was the time his physio shut down a plan to go riding with an AFL superstar, and how the Supercross Masters promoter was worried his headline act was injured in an aerobics TV show promo gone wrong. We also discuss a little-known plan by one of the greats of Australian Touring Car Racing that very nearly saw Craig switch to four wheels. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

Craig Dack - Part 2

After winning numerous titles in Australia, conquering New Zealand, and proudly wearing the green and gold while racing overseas, Dacka decided to stop competing in the early '90s to start his own team. This venture has enjoyed just as much success and continues to thrive. Managing his own deals as a rider helped him navigate the corporate sponsorship landscape. The depth and strength of these relationships led CDR to celebrate a 30-year milestone with Yamaha in 2023. Decades-long partnerships like this are incredibly rare in the world of sport today. We also discuss his time working with a young and fiercely determined Chad Reed when he took on the US, developing people management skills for young riders with differing personalities, and the changes he's witnessed through the eras. Dack realized early on that he didn't want to turn them into carbon copies. Additionally, we touch on some special bikes he's kept along the way that bookend his riding career and his thoughts on the future. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

Rob Herridge - Part 3

Building Maximum Motorsport into a ‘go-to’ race and rally car preparation business with a Subaru focus. The emergence of his son Dean as a driver and how the pair form a Yin and Yang partnership at Maximum, which is now an authorized Subie Motorsport Parts Dealer. Creating gravel notes for legends like Colin McRae and Ari Vatanen in New Zealand and nearly destroying the pace notes in a photocopier! Winning an Australian title without a handbrake! Who needs a handbrake in rallying anyway? It’s just extra weight. How Safari competition in cleverly modified Forester and XV models has quenched his easing thirst for driving. Rob turned 70 just days before we recorded, so will he ever truly ease off the throttle? Rob Herridge - Part 2

Rob’s been a commentator over the years (can you tell?), and he loves a good story, so we're only just shifting into second gear in this chat! Discover how Herridge jumped into rallying on a whim, convinced he was world champion material on the very first transport stage! Learn about the Datsun 1600 that started it all, his near switch to Mitsubishi, and the ultimate move to Subaru, sparking a partnership that’s lasted for decades. We recorded this episode in the workshop, surrounded by cars Rob has worked on and won in. The attachment to some of them is understandable, especially when you hear the story of how Rob clinched his second Australian title before officially receiving the first. Despite a lengthy and draining court battle, he never gave up. Special thanks to Rob James and Adelaide Hawkins from Motorsport Australia, who assisted with this episode while filming a TV story for an upcoming round of the Australian Rally Championship. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

Rob Herridge - Part 1

The two-time Australian Rally Champion who grew up in a sporting family and thrives on competition! Rob Herridge's early life around the family farm in Western Australia served as his apprenticeship for what he now calls himself—a "pretend-gineer." Though he may lack a formal qualification, the resourcefulness and precision he learned were perfect skills for motorsport preparation. Herridge was a late bloomer to rallying but not to speed sports. You'll hear about how he blocked pain through sheer determination to beat a record in barefoot waterskiing before channeling that thirst for success into power boating. Additionally, he learned a brutal lesson from his uncle as a teenager on what it takes to win in his other pastime, clay target shooting! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.

You'll hear about how he blocked pain through sheer determination to beat a record in barefoot waterskiing before channeling that thirst for success into power boating. Additionally, he learned a brutal lesson from his uncle as a teenager on what it takes to win in his other pastime, clay target shooting! The Team Penske driver, one of the modern-day IndyCar greats, is showing no signs of slowing down—he hit 233mph at the Brickyard in the Fast 12! Is Honda still in the fight after being largely upstaged by Chevy during the month of May? And does he have a good race car underneath him ahead of Carb Day? Plus, we discuss the Penske Push To Pass scandal and how the team has reshuffled and regrouped to focus on winning the biggest race of the year. Alison Drower - Part 1

She didn't want to come on, but she delivered in spades! We are proud to have tracked down and twisted the arm of the former Channel 10 Motorsport team member and intrepid ‘RPM’ reporter for a ‘where are they now’ feature episode. Doug was the King of Sydney radio then and was a popular member of Channel 7’s Bathurst coverage injecting his unmistakable humour to the call. Rob Smedley - Part 1

"Yeah baby!" Do you remember Rob’s classic F1 radio conversations with Felipe Massa? Well, we’ve tracked him down in the UK for a feature episode, and it's a ripper. From growing up in the north, impressing at University and getting a break in motorsport on the engineering side that would see Smedley spend the better part of his life in the Formula 1 paddock with memorable stints at Ferrari and Williams.  Rob’s delves deep into his vast time in pitlane, which also included time shaping some legendary cars in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at the height of the incredible arms race between the manufacturers in the two litre Super Touring era. He graciously took a break from his work with the Global Karting League, a groundbreaking initiative he's passionately leading, to join us for this conversation. The project is creating a buzz in the karting world and providing unprecedented opportunities in Motorsport to those who previously may not have had the chance to begin. We’re on the road for this latest feature episode in a workshop on the outskirts of Melbourne with Supercars driver and broadcaster Jack Perkins.  Jack opens up about the deep-rooted passion for motorsport that runs in his family, tracing back to his grandfather's competitive spirit and involvement in motorsport before and after WWII. He shares heartwarming stories of growing up, visiting the family farm in Cowangie, and why harvest time holds a special place in his heart. The episode takes a nostalgic turn as Jack reminisces about his father, Larry Perkins', thrilling yet perilous days in Formula 1 during the legendary 1970s. It's a candid look into a time when the sport was fraught with danger, but also filled with undeniable excitement and innovation. But perhaps most touching is Jack's story of how he, as a young boy, persistently badgered his father for a Go Kart—a request that would eventually see a third-generation Perkins take the competitive motorsport stage. Dive into the world of racing legacy, family bonds, and the undying love for motorsport in this compelling episode of Rusty's Garage with Jack Perkins. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Motorsport Brief episodes with Rusty.

Max Wilson - Part 1

You spoke. And we listened. We’ve tracked down Max Wilson at home in Brazil to find out what he's up to these days.  From how Brazilian F1 legends like Piquet and Senna inspired him as a youngster, to the moment a birthday present set him on a path that would see him race all round the world and the serious roll call of South American competitors he came up against like Kanaan, Zonta and Castroneves that helped shape his readiness for Europe. Wilson discusses the opportunity in a few sliding doors moments like Michael Schumacher’s former manager Willi Weber helping him into a ride, Christian Danner offering words of wisdom about mastering those wild DTM cars and turning down a drive with Porsche to focus on Formula One. Plus, a love of fitness (Martial Arts especially) and how Mike Tyson’s approach to preparation really resonated with him.   Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Motorsport Brief episodes with Rusty.

Dick Bennetts - Part 2

The story of an ace engineer and team owner who has worked with the biggest and best F1 drivers. We chat the move into Touring Cars with his West Surrey Racing team at the height of an arms race in the 2-litre Super Touring era. Remember that? The late Murray Walker lent his iconic commentary to the coverage for some years and so many big name manufacturers were involved spending telephone number sized budgets to try and win! Then there’s the BMW’s they now run in the BTCC and the work required around its hybrid program. Dick is adamant about working with drivers to properly understand their feedback and how that ‘feel’ is still incredibly important in finding ways to fine tune the race car, not just relying on the data. And of course you’ll be wowed by more stories of the legends he’s worked with along the way as well as an eye on the future, what’s next for Dick Bennetts? Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Motorsport Brief episodes with Rusty.

The Motorsport Brief: 2024 Supercars Season Preview

We are joined by Phil Branagan, a writer for www.motorsport.com and Autosport, to cast an expert eye over the 2024 Repco V8 Supercars grid and assess their chances ahead of Round 1 this weekend at Bathurst. Despite the reported breakdown of its relationship with champion driver Brodie Kostecki, we explore why the ingredients for Erebus' success are still intact. Additionally, we delve into how Will Brown's transition to Red Bull carries an added weight of expectation. Grove Racing emerges as a new powerhouse on the grid, equipped with all the right elements to challenge for supremacy. Meanwhile, teams like DJR are endeavoring to recapture the magic through expanded teams, restructures, downsizes, and more. And a crucial question looms: have we finally achieved parity in the new Gen 3 era between Mustang and Camaro? This podcast serves as your perfect snapshot guide, offering insights into the dynamics before the racing action kicks off at Mount Panorama. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Motorsport Brief episodes with Rusty.

Greg Siddle - Part 2

We got permission from Pee Wee’s media manager Mark Larkham to tell this story so we twisted Larko’s arm and made it a two parter! And there is plenty in it, including why Greg is like a father figure to Larko and how he taught him to take the emotion out of the big decisions. Plus, inspiring Sam Michael to chase the F1 dream after he impressed during his time working for Pee Wee and Larko in the Formula Holden program. Why he gave Eddie Jordan a bit of a ‘tune-up’ when Sam got crook while working for Jordan F1 in the UK. And the great friendship the trio have to this day. There’s also fascinating yarns on working with Niki Lauda to come and race in Australia, the advice he gave Mark Webber and helping to establish a successful Formula Ford chassis distributorship in Australia. The accounts department at one major sponsor jokingly called him Mr Reverse Cashflow, but Pee Wee worked seriously hard to stitch together a massive deal that took Aussies like the Great Peter Brock, Larry Perkins and more to Le Mans in a Porsche! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Gabriele Tarquini - Part 1

Rusty was a massive fan of the British Touring Car Championship in the 90’s (he’s still got the VHS tapes) so when he arrived at Bathurst recently and saw Gabriele there, he had to chat with him. A star in karts, he had no real intention of going car racing! Some practice laps in an open wheeler changed that and Gabriele went all the way to Formula 1. Sadly the F1 cars he raced weren’t great for showcasing his talent but in a Touring Car he was something else. His little known meeting with the legendary Enzo Ferrari, memories of that iconic Alfa Romeo 155 in the BTCC & much more.  Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

The Bathurst winner and his son join Rusty in a chat for the generations... literally. The Bargwanna’s have been around Motorsport for a long time, we chart their history and relive Jason’s early years which involved taking big punts and often running on a tank filled with nothing more than pure enthusiasm. How growing up around cars and racing set both of them on this path, what it means to represent Australia and the influence of the late Peter Brock. It's all there in a beautifully layered chat of fun, inspiration and determination.  Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Jason and Ben Bargwanna - Part 2

It’s still raining outside and practice hasn’t started yet so Jabba & Jabba Junior (that will make sense as the conversation continues) are in their motorhome chatting around the table with Rusty. Recorded at Sandown and released in the lead-up to the Aussie rounds of the TCR World Tour at Sydney Motorsport Park and Bathurst, Rusty uncovers the plan to build on Ben’s international outings this year at Spa and in Portugal. Plus the deal they’ve pieced together with Garry Rogers Motorsport, some Peugeots and a couple of gun French drivers for our home events. Oh, and is Jase tempted to pull the helmet back on? How a little restoration project might make it easy to twist his arm. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Nick Harris - Part 1

In the lead-up to the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island we have none other than the The voice of MotoGP. Nick Harris spent decades on the tour working as a commentator, journalist, in PR and amongst it all, he found time to become a best selling author. You’ll be spellbound by the stories of working with the all-time greats in a career that takes in both a golden era of 500cc racing and almost two decades of the new 4 stroke chapter, now producing some of the most competitive racing we’ve seen. And he opens up on the difficulties of ‘rolling off the throttle’ when he stopped commentating on motorcycle racing’s premier class.  Rusty really should have done this pod ages ago, in the Island Media Centre after Nick hosted one of his countless Press Conferences in unmistakable Harris style. But, the time is now for you to enjoy tales from almost 50 years working around the sport. From phoning through reports and telexes to the the call he took about Eddie Lawson joining the Honda team that Wayne Gardner never knew about! Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Dave Casey - Part 2

The old adage "never judge a book by its cover"  has never been truer in this episode of Rusty's Garage. Beyond Dave Casey's larrikin exterior lies a proud Rockhampton man who travels the country chasing the SuperUte crown. Explore how this class has risen in prominence after enduring a few challenging seasons and gain insight into why Dave relishes riding the current wave of the competition. Dave's journey includes benchmarking himself against renowned racers and seeking guidance from figures like Paul Morris (whose wisdom can be found in the Garage library). These experiences have significantly bolstered his confidence, transforming him into a genuine contender on race weekends. Discover how mental fitness plays a pivotal role in his journey, and keep an eye out for the possibility of Dave's return to SST (Stadium Super Trucks). That chapter with Robby Gordon and Co. appears to be unfinished business if it reignites Down Under. This episode is proudly brought to you by Bendix Brakes, a mutual supporter of Dave and Rusty's Garage. Bendix Brakes manufactures world-class brake upgrade kits suitable for a wide range of applications, and "Mudflap" thoroughly puts them to the test in Utes and 4WDs wherever he goes. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Louise Goodman - Part 1

Step back to a golden era of Formula One with one of Rusty’s cherished colleagues, Louise Goodman. From the young UK traveler who ventured to Australia and seized an opportunity at the Adelaide Grand Prix that propelled her into the exciting world of F1 to working with legends like Eddie Jordan, Martin Brundle and others and doing PR before an almost ‘sink or swim’ move into pit reporting for the live TV coverage. Louise Goodman became one of the most loved figures in the paddock that just about anyone would talk to and they still do. She shares what it was like to work for EJ and recalls the heart-stopping tale of Eddie Irvine waterskiing just days before a Grand Prix, all while Neil Crompton was at the helm of the boat! Lou also shares a backstory of one her PR collaborations with Martin Brundle and a daring role swap with Colin McRae. We also explore a pivotal moment in the history of the Jordan team in Belgium. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.

Louise Goodman - Part 2

There is plenty to come with my colleague and the esteemed F1 TV reporter, Louise Goodman. Louise's extensive network and profound respect from key personnel in the pitlane have afforded her almost unparalleled access, peeling back the curtain on the intricate workings of Formula One.  Not that she actively claims it, but Lou stands as something of a pioneering figure for women in the modern era of motorsport, having ventured from PR and communications to broadcasting, all while maintaining a humble team-player mentality that underscores her commitment and professionalism.  She shares the story of chatting to the stars of Oceans 11 before the Monaco Grand Prix and working with broadcasting royalty in Murray Walker. Louise's resilience and her rapport with the teams enabled her to actively work on a pit stop giving viewers a unique insight. Plus, some golden takeaways for young racers around media training which once included a young talent named Lando Norris. All that and more, in our latest feature interview. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about in future Rusty's Garage episodes.
