For the last 25 years, Matthew Hard has put together a fine football resume. Growing up in Melbourne and playing for Noble Park in the cities South East, Matt was enticed to the Coolamon Football Club in 1999 as a 24-year-old. Overcoming injury and facing the challenges of moving to a new town with unfamiliar surroundings, Matt quickly became one of the most respected football identities in the Riverina.

In 2012, he became only the second NRL player or official to come out as gay; he has been instrumental in the ongoing work of destigmatising mental illness in the game, and now, on the eve of his new role with the NRL as a mental health welfare leader for referees and officials, he talks about where his journey’s up to; how he got here; and where he’s going next.
