Wild Rule Breaking Season 2 Finale with Dr Billy Garvey

It’s back! The episode where Hamish tears up the HODD rule book, by going over an hour AND talking to an expert. And not just any expert, but leading behavioural paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Dr Billy Garvey. Wild, right?  In the sequel to his awesome Season 1 Episode, Dr Billy has been beyond generous with his time and has picked some choice moments from Season 2 to unpack with Hame and look at the clinical evidence behind the parenting gut work. And then Billy further builds on this to provide some amazing practical advice for a multitude of different scenarios that we commonly face as parents.  But here’s the heartening thing, and this has come up time and time again this season… Billy reaffirms that some of the most important things we can do as parents is in fact the simple stuff. Listen to them. Love them. Be led by them. Not always as easy as it sounds in the rough and tumble of daily life, but nonetheless, something simple we can all strive for each and every day.  Massive thanks to Dr Billy for his generosity. He’s a busy guy (and new father to a second child!!🥂) So to spend so much time applying his wealth of knowledge for our benefit is deeply appreciated. And you can get way more of Billy’s knowhow on his very own podcast called Pop Culture Parenting. Check it out, it’s bloody great! And also @drbillygarvey on insta.  And that’s Season Two! We’ve had a blast knocking it out… It really is a gift spending time with our guests and soaking up their passion, positivity and wisdom. Huge thanks to them for their generosity, honesty and vulnerability. Thanks to all you guys for listening every week and for getting in touch with your stories and suggestions. It’s continually amazing to hear how this pod has connected with people, often in the most unexpected ways. Special thanks to our creative team - Darcy, Tom Cardy and Tey Vandenburg.  And of course, mostly thanks to all the Mums!! The brains behind most operations, certainly in our respective households! For us, there is no such thing as dadding without you!! Hopefully we’ll see ya next season!  Hame and Tim xx  —— Huge, big, 12 seater rental van sized thanks to HERTZ, our exclusive sponsor for season 2. Thanks to them we were able to pull this season together and we really appreciate their support. You can also show your support by heading to hertz.com.au/hodd next time you need a rental car. How Ben Crowe Dads

Mindset coach to some of the world’s finest athletes, Ben Crowe reflects on his dadding journey so far. Given Ben is used to helping other people discover their story rather than delving into and analysing his own, we are really grateful to him for his openness and honesty, in what was a fascinating chat with Hame.  Ben is the first to admit, like all of us, he’s continually making mistakes as a parent, and that putting all his professional knowledge into practice as a dad is far easier said than done. However, as someone who can expertly distil simple lessons from complex philosophies, Ben has some amazing insights to offer and some beautifully accessible and practical advice that we can all take something from.  And these days Ben isn’t just helping people win Wimbledon… anyone can rediscover their mojo via his app, aptly called Mojo.  Check it out! Big thanks to Ben for chatting with us. He’s an in-demand guy, so we really appreciate his time and wisdom. This is the penultimate episode for Season 2 - and for our wild rule breaking finale we are lucky enough to have back behavioural paediatrician, Dr. Billy Garvey, who will be revisiting some previous episodes with his expert eye, or rather ear… and brain. It’s the cheat sheet ep! Don’t miss it. — And big thanks to HERTZ - Our Hertz and Merch comp is still running - for your chance to win a Polestar EV for the weekend and some super exclusive How Other Dads Dad Merch head to hertz.com.au/hoddev - Terms and conditions apply and are available at the website, entries close 4 December, 2023.  Thanks to Hertz for making it all happen. —— If you wanna drop us a note, we bloody love hearing from you. How Craig Foster Dads

Craig Foster - former Socceroo captain, legendary sports broadcaster, social justice champion… but his most important job?  You guessed it… Good 'ol Dad! As a compassionate and thoughtful leader who spends much of his time helping those who don't have a voice, Craig talks about why justice and fairness are core tenets of his and how this informs his parenting. Fozz also discusses shepherding his kids though the teenage years and the almost comical lengths he’s gone to keep a watchful eye. And as a leading advocate in the multicultural and refugee space, he speaks quite beautifully about the commonality created by parenting, and that when you strip things back, what we all indisputably share as parents is a deep desire for our kids to be safe, happy and loved. We told you he was thoughtful! Craig’s CV is long, varied and representative of his desire to make a positive impact. He’s got an AM for humanitarian services, nominated as Australian of the year, a member of The Australian Multicultural society, an Adjunct Professor of Sport and Social Responsibility and an author. Oh, and 2022 he was named Father of the Year, which as he describes to Hamish, he views as an opportunity to advocate for kids and parents in the multicultural community and the huge benefit that father figures can have mentoring kids who are not their own, something that Craig does a lot of himself. Huge thanks to Fozz for coming on and talking so honestly, passionately and with such thoughtfulness. What a treat for us.  And what a wonderful leader to have in our community —- Our Hertz and Merch Comp is still running! How Russel Howcroft Dads

Russel Howcroft has been talking to Australians about how they are sold things for years on the much loved TV show Gruen - Now he lets us in on the secret of how he sells things to his kids! (Hint: like any good client pitch, it’s more guiding, less telling In a free ranging chat that follows the whims of Russ’s very active mind, he explores with Hame how his own upbringing influences the choices he now makes as a father, how he has actively fostered creativity in his kids, and why it can be scary to do so. He explains his devotion to instilling confidence in his kids, and creating the freedom to make their own choices (and their own mistakes!). He also revisits times when he was a very busy corporate guy, and how with the benefit of hindsight, he views the perpetual challenge of balancing work and life. And Russ also finishes with a big long list. It’s a bit like his version of (Everybody’s Free) to Wear Sunscreen, but on the way he parents.  Maybe we can put it to music one day! His final point is perhaps his best.  We teach our kids how to love - so make sure you do it right! With wife Kate, Russ is a parent to 3 adult children. Other than on occasion Shunning Hamish - Russ is best known as a longtime panellist on Gruen (and previously Gruen Transfer), and he is co-host of Melbourne’s top rating breakfast radio show, Ross and Russ on 3AW. He’s had a long and successful career as a business leader, is the author of 3 books, and is the chair of the Australian Film Television and Radio School and of the Jim Stynes Foundation.  Go Russ! —- And GO HERTZ!  Thanks to Hertz, we’ve got a competition for you to enter.  For your chance to win one of 5 weekend hire packages for a Polestar EV and some very exclusive HODD merch, head to hertz.com.au/hoddev.  Terms and Conditions available at the website. How Sam Wood Dads

Health and fitness industry expert and entrepreneur Sam Wood has a beautifully honest chat with Hame about his dadding journey.   From what’s like to begin your dadding with a 9 year old step daughter, to then only eight short years later having 4 daughters, Sam shares with Hame the struggles he’s had learning on the job with a teenager, how he tries to instil adventurousness and positivity into his kids each day and how the death of his mother when he was a teenager completely reframed the relationship with his own father. How Maggie Dent Helps Dads Dad

Hold on, it’s another Wild Rule Breaking Episode, this time with an EXPERT MUM! The legendary Maggie Dent, one of Australia's most trusted voices on raising kids and helping families. Last season, Hamish made some bold statements about not having experts on this pod, unless it’s ones he really likes, like Maggie Dent for example.  Well, blow me down… Maggie got in touch and said she’d love to have a chat (and a weak almond cap with one).  So, we feel very lucky to bring you some practical advice and words of wisdom from a mother of 4 sons, author of heaps of books, and someone who has spent years talking to parents about how a common sense approach can strengthen a family and help raise happy, healthy kids. Maggie hosts one of the very best parenting podcasts, Parental as Anything and has got a brand new one called The Good Enough Dad (Hames pops up in an episode).  She’s also got a fantastic treasure trove of resources available at her website www.maggiedent.com/ - We encourage you to have a look, there is some really helpful stuff for common issues. Big thanks to Maggie for making the time to chat and distil down her many years of research and wisdom. —- Big thanks for HERTZ - our exclusive season 2 sponsor. How Beau Miles Dads

Adventurer, filmmaker, outdoor education specialist, dad… Beau Miles has got lots of cool descriptors. He’s also infectiously positive and creative, and he put all these things to amazing use in this very different, very outdoorsy and very wet episode. Exactly 345 km from their respective houses, on a little island in the middle of a giant hydro lake somewhere in the snowy mountains, Hamish and Beau recorded this episode while doing some pretty unique memory making with their kids. Having trekked all day to meet each other, with kids in tow and lugging a lot of gear - they chat about risk taking, learning on the job and about trying to do better as dads. And throughout the chat, it rains. Heaps! Very excitedly, you can find Beau’s wonderful film about this adventure on his youtube page HERE. Beau is super honest about all the dadding stuff he’s yet to figure out, but also has many words of wisdom from his time as an outdoor education specialist (which he has a PhD in) working with impressionable kids and young adults.  On some of his more audacious adventures he’s also spent many a day on his own, thinking… which we reckon has given him a bit of extra clarity that we can all take something from. For all things Beau, including films, live shows and books, head to https://beaumiles.com/ - Big thanks to Beau, Mitch and Jodi for making the adventure happen, which was recorded on the beautiful mountain lands of the Ngarigo people. --- And if this episode has inspired you to take a trip and make some memories with your kids, our friends at HERTZ have got you covered. Head to hertz.com.au/hodd to book a car and receive a great deal. How Scott Cam Dads

We all know Scott Cam from The Block, but a few years ago, some words of wisdom from Scott Cam The Dad provided Hamish with some of the inspiration to create this pod.  So, we advise you to Tools Down and listen in to a dad that takes his fathering trade really seriously… especially if it involves being a bit silly. And even more so if it means blowing off school! Scott is of course the much-loved host of The Block, but he’s still a carpenter at heart. (Hame once borrowed Scott’s chisel set and WASHED THEM!! - Scott was beyond mortified). As a dad to three adult kids, Scott has got a tonne of hard-earned wisdom to pass on, and while he describes himself as an ‘old school’ dad - to us he sounds like a big softy that just expects his kids to be good people above all else.  Hame loved this chat with Scott, and in it we get to hear a side of Scott that reveals a man who really, deeply loves his family and has some strong opinions on what helps a family stay close, loving and “good people”. Even without a bathroom reveal, it’s a great listen! — Big thanks to our Season 2 Sponsor, HERTZ.  Just like us, Hertz are all about memory making and adventure - so if you’ve got a trip planned, make sure you head to hertz.com.au/hodd to take advantage of 25% off the base rate.

How Eddie Betts Dads

He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie’s wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning… for his kids, and for his people. Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids.  His lunch box game is elite!  But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. The benefits are huge, and it’s not just because of the extra babysitting! Eddie might be a dad to 5, but he is also a role model to thousands, and the way he takes it all in his stride with so much grace and humility is pretty inspiring.  He’s one of the AFL’s greatest small forwards of all time, kicking 640 goals and receiving Goal of the Year a record 4 times. But since retirement he has turned his energy and passion away from football to become an amazing advocate for indigenous youth, with a special focus on education and creating culturally safe spaces. He has also published two children’s books, My Kind and My People, as part of his Eddie’s Lil’ Homies series, which excitingly looks set to become a TV show on Netflix. You can find out more about Eddie’s amazing work HERE — Big thanks to our Season 2 Sponsor, HERTZ.  Just like us, Hertz are all about memory making and adventure - so if you’ve got a trip planned, make sure you head to hertz.com.au/hodd to take advantage of 25% off the base rate. How Christian O'Connell Dads

An old friend of Hame, and according to his daughters an old dad, Christian O’Connell is a bona fide legend of radio broadcasting. And really, he’s not even old! In this super funny, yet super heartfelt episode, Christian uses all 19 years of his dadding experience to distil down for us some really amazing insights and advice. He’s thought about this dadding caper a lot, so from explaining his mantra of “no small moments”, to advice on how to negotiate with teenagers, Christian has put his formidable gift for communication to wonderful use for us in this episode.  So sit down (or keep washing the dishes), start a new note, and jot down a few of Christian’s pearlers. We sure did! Christian, (aided wonderfully by our good friend Jack Post) hosts the incredibly successful breakfast slot on Melbourne’s GOLD FM, which then goes out nationally in the evenings.  But he’s actually pretty new to Australia, having only moved here in 2018. Before that he was one of the UK’s most successful and celebrated radio presenters, with top rating shows on Absolute Radio, Virgin Radio and XFM. Christian has also spoken very openly about his battles with anxiety and panic attacks which precipitated his move to Australia in his book No One Listens To Your Dad’s Show.  He’s also got a great podcast called Stuff of Legends, and you can find his chat with Hame HERE. — Big thanks to our great friends at HERTZ, our exclusive sponsor for the whole of Season 2.  Just like us, they are big fans of adventure and memory making and in a great deal for HODD listeners, if you need a rental car in Australia, head to hertz.com.au/hodd for 25% off the base rate.  What a great deal!  Ts&Cs apply.  See website for details. How Tim Minchin Dads

Tim Minchin has created the most amazing, diverse and groundbreaking body of work. Significant to this episode is that he also co-created 2 kids with his wife, Sarah. Tim was extremely generous to sit down with Hame and share some of his 17 years or so of dadding experiences and learnings. He explains how he tries to shepherd his kids rather than control them, his family's experience with neurodiversity and ASD, and how he applies reason, logic and in his words “anti-drama” to his dadding. Tim is a real clever clogs and thinks deeply about, well… everything. And he is super honest. It makes for a chat that is both wisdom filled and thought provoking. But underpinning it all for Tim is the fervent belief that if your kids know unequivocally that you love them for who they are, you’re doing a lot right. If you've been hiding under a rock for the last 20 years, Tim is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, composer, comedian, actor, musician, writer, author, performer, thinker and producer. We’d use the word polymath, but we don’t really understand what it means. He’s sold out shows all over the world, he’s appeared in film, television and theatre, winning heaps of awards along the way. He’s even won a bloody LOGIE! And his fine work is heard weekly in our households currently, because he wrote the music and lyrics for the phenomenally great and funny Matilda the Musical.  Tim has a tour happening in Australia beginning in October 2023 - and there are still tickets available!!  He didn’t even tell us about this… and he hardly needs a plug, but you can find all his gig details at www.timminchin.com — Lastly, a big hearty thanks to our very good friends at Hertz who are supporting us for all of Season 2. What legends. Hertz also have a legendary deal for HODD listeners at hertz.com.au/hodd – with 25% off selected car rentals in Australia. Ts&Cs apply. Only available at select locations. How Martin "Rac" Heppell Dads

Former teacher and assistant principal, current powerhouse of enthusiasm and expertise, Martin Heppell, or just Rac as he is known to friends, blows Hame away in this episode. Yes, there are some crazy stories, but also some amazing insights that can only be gained from spending thousands of hours helping kids to be their best. Oh, and having 3 kids of his own. Rac comes to How Other Dads Dad care of The Resilience Project where he is one of the key facilitators, working with thousands of kids every year.  He has also appeared on the wonderful podcast, The Imperfects, and it was Imperfects Co-Host Hugh van Cuylenburg who said to Hame - “You gotta get Rac on HODD!” Thank goodness we did. Apart from some wild tales about growing up in Borneo that taught Rac some lifelong lessons, he chats about building trust with our kids in order to foster a super robust connection, which hopefully means when times get tricky they can tell you anything and everything.  He also talks really practically about kids pushing through difficult moments, and how as a parent you can support them through this. It’s practical. It’s informed. It’s bloody useful stuff and Rac delivers it all with such humility and honesty. And he finishes with one of the all time great dadding stories! Thanks to Rac for wearing his heart on his sleeve, sharing his wisdom and sacrificing all dignity for a good story! You can hear more of Rac HERE on The Imperfects. How Joe Brumm Dads

Season 2 kicks off with our top requested guest, Joe Brumm, creator of the global smash show Bluey & perhaps Australia’s favourite dad, Bandit Healer. More importantly, he’s also father to two children in real life. Whether your kids are young, or now approaching adulthood themselves, the themes of Bluey are universal and timeless to us all, and Joe has managed to capture the experiences of parenting young children in a most beautiful, funny, and insightful way. Joe and Hamish discuss the responsibility and daily challenge that comes with being a role model for your kids. Joe shares some amazing insights into the theory of play, why it's important developmentally and some great hacks to help parents get into it.
