Peter Sagan bows out, Jakobsen has a close call & Adegeest surprises

Kate and Joel get comfy in the bunker, and kick off with some news that has really hit hard here at the Wheelhouse – Peter Sagan is retiring.  We look back at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, just how good are Loes Adegeest and Marius Maryhofer. The Tour of San Juan has wrapped in Argentina, with a win for Miguel Angel Lopez, a near miss for Fabio Jakobsen and Aussie sprinter Sam Welsford steps up for two victories. CycloCross World Champs are here, and Kate’s excited for a big showdown between Van Der Poel and Wout Van Aert, and Pieterse and Van Empel. Why did Pogacar and Majka’s ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ goes viral, again?

Getting corkscrewed at the Tour Down Under!

The wheelhouse ascends (Adelaides infamous corkscrew) for a roadside broadcast as the men sweat through stage 3 of the tour down under. Joel’s back from holidays, and therefore lugs all the gear. Kate is up for a chat, and putting her feet up on the wheelhouse esky. The team discusses: why it’s worth packing the cycle and heading up into the Adelaide hills (just, wow). the intricacies of the iconic Corkscrew climb the elite finish to the women’s historic tour, and the surprise performers tempers flaring and hips cracking in the men’s race Mark Cavendish finally finds a home for 2023 team tips for the GC in the men’s TDU Keep your eyes/ears peeled for a number of special cameos, as the wheelhouse officially gets corkscrewed!

A star studded summer of cycling, what’s in a name, and why is Caleb Ewan racing for the national team?

It’s almost Christmas time and it seems everyone is rushing to drop their big news before they shutter up for Christmas. Kate is wearing Christmas pants, the bunker is set with lights and tinsel, and there is a certain Christmas spirit in the air. We’ve got big news about who’s coming to Adelaide for the TDU, with the Aussies set to light up both the women’s and men’s races. Lizzie Deignan is back after becoming a Mum to her second daughter. The implications of World Tour relegation are starting to show, with Lotto DSTNY noticeable absent from many a start list, and on that topic, why do teams keep changing their names?! Where do we draw the line with sports washing, and do the riders have any power to push back. The Tour De France is headed to Italy and Kate shares a memory of Marco Pantani and some questionable pink lycra shorts The Vuelta leaves Barcelona, but will it bring the same drama as 1962 And after 125 years of the Austral, who were the winners. As usual, there is lots of fun in The Wheelhouse bunker so please like, follow and share and have a wonderful holiday season. We’ll see you soon!

Aussie Jay Vine | From Zwift Racer to Grand Tour stage winner

This is one of the most honest and no nonsense interviews with an athlete you’ll hear this year. In 2022 Aussie Jay Vine  won TWO incredible stages at the Vuelta Espana, but he hasn’t had a typical ascent to Grand Tour stage winner. Buoyed by the unwavering support of his best friend and wife, Bre, the Vines embarked on a European odyssey with eyes wide open, determined to make their mark. Both revered e-sports racers, Bre and Jay talk Zwift tactics, and Jay delves into the highs of grand tour stage victories at La Vuelta, and wearing the coveted King of the Mountains jersey, to the lows of crashing out and having his life flash before his eyes. From inside The Wheelhouse Bunker, Jay shares what’s behind his incredible drive and resilience, and the philosophy behind his raw, analytical approach. He opens up about his experiences at Alpecin, and tells us what really drove him to break his contract and head to UAE, and well as why he looks forward to racing alongside Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar. Not afraid to tackle the big issues, the Vines talk about how tough it is for the Aussies to get noticed by international teams, Jay questions the recruitment tactics in the World Tour, shares his thoughts on why he skipped Aussie Road Nats and the mind set behind his meteoric rise + tells us which race he has his eye on in Season 2023. The Vines have such a compelling story. If you love your cycling this episode is a must listen.

A failed quiz, indoor cycling, the five best places to ride your bike in Australia

On this week episode, spirits are high as Kate returns from a mtb adventure, while Joel narrowly avoids a vicious snake bite. Gerraint Thomas seeks public opinion to plan his race calendar after a disappointing Tour de France route reveal, what the heck is indoor cycling, and what are those moves called? Tom Dumoulin reckons pro athletes are a little crazy, how well does Kate remember the 2022 road cycling season,  and why do athletes have to apply to be on an AusCycling (Cycling Australia) national team? The team traverses thousands of kms around Australia for their Top 5 cycling regions for ride riding, and the AusCycling SheRides Zero to Hero program hits a high note. What's Elon Musk got to do with cycling, facial recognition to find a ride buddy, and Jay Vine fly's the coup.

This week there’s some excitement in the bunker as Kate and Joel welcome special guest Jordana Blackman, founder and chief chick at Chicks Who Ride Bikes. Having just released a special app for women’s cycling, Jordana now has two things in common with Elon Musk, being a tech wizard, as well as a fan of bikes. At least we assume Elon is a fan given the Model B ebike from Tesla which looks amazing, but leaves some confusion about how the non traditional handlebars work. Musks twitter takeover has us pondering what may happen if he were to buy the Tour De France, and closer to home soil, Aussie  Jay Vine exits his Alpecin team contract early. Pauline Ferrand Prevot makes her Ineos team debut, but it’s a shocker where she easily out performs her faulty bike at Koppenberg cross. Jonas Vingegaard crosses the line first…. But did he win? Lachy Morton is fighting the good fight, and yet again the question gets asked, where is the world in Mark Cavendish going for 2023. As always, it’s a fun one! Listen, like, follow and share!

All the colours of the rainbow (jersey) are on full display as the Wheelhouse with Kate and Joel dishes up an extra special Wollongong World's Road Race preview edition. Kate lists her top 5 picks out of the star studded women's and men's fields, with Joel forcing her to choose individual race winners, adapt to new rider nicknames, and embrace a fresh catalogue of worlds' themed puns. Joel tries to wrap his head around some of the UCI equipment rules, such as 'sock measuring' and 'bike motor screening' protocol, while Kate explains course intricacies and ponders whether the peloton will pause to snap selfies along the ridiculously picturesque route. No preview edition would be complete without respectful nods to the amazing array of great Australians, and race threatening magpies, that call the region home. Cadel Evans joins The Wheelhouse with Kate and Joel

As Australia’s only Tour de France, and World Road winner, Cadel Evans is a true icon of Australian cycling. This special episode is a must listen, and will have you examining Cadel’s world champion winning ways in a new light. From what it feels like to don the rainbow jersey, to whether or not Belgian egos will get in the way in Wollongong. What kind of strategy is needed on the 2022 worlds course, how it feels when your team doesn’t back you, and is Caleb Ewan really so much shorter than Erik Zabel?  As usual, it’s a lot of fun. So please listen, watch, like and share.
