Member For Murray Helen Dalton weekly catch up - 27th June

Week in parliament/budget Spent  last week in Sydney at parliament. In and out of the chambers It is a pretty hectic place at the best of times but the announcement of the state budget made it even more so. The budget was pretty typical of a government heading into an election, no surprise most of the focus is on the city where the votes are and regional NSW missed out. It has been pretty hard to find any detail on where the big spends are going and what that means for us here in Murray $130 million SES $5 billion childcare $400 million indigenous housing, education justice, youth and health $500 million in housing funding, Families: $150 sweetener for families of school children to spend on school supplies. $  swim voucher $ art voucher We had some wins across Murray with new funding for the Barooga Pool receiving $500,000 and Wentworth Mens Shed $385,000. It’s always disappointing to see the same funding appear year after year with no action, Moama police station has appeared on the last two budgets and we haven’t even seen a shovel hit the ground. No provision for any visionary infrastructure expenditure on dams however we  did get some investment in rail funding on the Griffith to Hillston line, Tharbogang crossing loop and upgrade, Wumbulgal siding and Junee to Griffith line upgrade and immediate loop, Narrandera Tocumwal Railway line activation and Stockinbingal to Griffith line. Australia needs investment in nation building infrastructure like rail, we desperately need a standardised and connected rail system across the nation for many reasons including:                 efficient agricultural supply lines reduction in carbon emissions – 1 freight train can take 180 B Doubles off the road, less trucks on the road, less damage to our roads still need truck freight Murrumbidgee High School Funding of $1.3 million was announced in the 2020-21 budget for major upgrades at both Murrumbidgee Regional high schools site for a multipurpose space, a gym and an assembly space. In May I put a question on notice to parliament asking when the gym and assembly space at the former Wade high School site and the multi purpose space on the former Griffith site be completed? The only answer I was given was the projects are in the planning and design phase and progress will be communicated to the school communities. These are important projects for the school community and shouldn’t be dragged out, there seemed to be a lot of reallocated funds in this years budget. Wade High School was established in 1971 as Griffith’s second high school. It is co-educational and has an enrolment of approximately 720 students and 63 staff. Students attending Wade High School have a wide range of opportunities on offer. Petition Griffith Hospital Radiation Griffith hospital is seeking $650,000 to cover a bulk billing shortfall to eliminate out of pocket expenses for patients receiving radiation treatment. The project missed out on funding in this years budget and yet former deputy premier John Barilaro has been tapped on the shoulder for a $500,000 a year senior trade and investment commissioner role to the America’s, hardly seems fair or right. When Griffith comes online in March it will join Wagga Hospital patients who will share the unfortunate outcome of being the only patients in the state of NSW who will have to pay out of pocket expenses for radiation treatment. I have launched an online petition to address this issue to get some action, joining forces with Independent member for Wagga Dr Joe McGirr. It is extremely important our residents across both these electorates receive treatment close to where their live and at no cost and we will continue to lobby the government  for a common sense solution. The petition can be found at helendaltonmp.com.au. Remember to please print the petition and email to [email protected] or send via the post to our office 104 Banna Avenue Griffith.
